19 Peter Street and 1 Fair Street, known as Clarkes Bar Drogheda was built in 1850 and more than likely traded as a Grocery Store.
In 1900 Thomas Reid transferred his Pub License from Little Denmark Street in Dublin to 19 Peter Street Drogheda and commenced trading as a Grocer and Spirit Merchant. His Daughter Nano Reid was born in March 1900 and went on to become Irelands Foremost Visual Artist. During her time in Drogheda she felt her talents were unappreciated by her town folk and felt a little bitter for this. A plaque in her honour will be unveiled in October 2013.
In 1926 Thomas sold the pub to two brothers from Dublin known simply as the Connolly Brothers who traded successfully until 1960 when they sold on to Paddy Clarke and his wife Maureen. The Clarke family, who lived above the premises ran a strict pub and Paddy was known to refuse those who appeared drunk, but in fact were only venturing out on their nights entertainment. And low and behold if you appeared to be Sponging or Bumming off your friend the exit was your destiny!
In 1996 Maureen decided to retire and the pub was sold at auction. A full house was guaranteed on Pembroke Road, Dublin for this Trophy pub and Fintan Gunne (Deceased) dropped the hammer in favour of Brian Browning (current owner).
